excitement colours part 2: tickle me pink

Part two in my series on Edith Head’s aptly termed Excitement Colours, from her world-renowned book, How to Dress For Success. This post, Shocking Pink, which Edith calls “Schiaperelli’s gift to fashion excitement”.

Tickle Me Pink!

Shocking pink is not for everyone… yet this bold and intense colour is bound to capture everyone’s attention. Best suited to cooler skin tones (blue or pink undertones, pale white, yellowish or dark, brunettes and deep coloured eyes). So, if it’s not your shade… be the exception and accessorise!

excitement colours part 1: purple patch

In How to Dress for Success Edith Head eloquently enlightens us on ways we can… well… dress for success. In chapter seven of this popular book, Edith talks about the colours we can wear to suit our complexion and how we need to understand our colour aura (the colour of our eyes, complexion and hair). She also defines a range of colour groups, including, The Elegant Colours, The Young Colours, The Slimming Colours, The Excitement Colours, The Man-Pleasing Colours (men might be immediately attracted to red but they all wear blue. Single ladies, opt for blue), and The You Colours.

‘The Excitement Colours’ caught my attention because they’re fun and so very on trend right now! Edith says that they “never fail to get a second look.”

So with that in mind, I thought I’d do a series of posts on each of Edith’s excitement colours. Starting with purple in honour of Edith’s book.

Hope you enjoy!

Purple Patch!

Shades of purple, violet and lavender suit most colour auras – in particular fair to medium skin, blondes and brunettes.

H-O-T News: Positive Posters 2010 finalists announced (#ptw)

Hailey McKenzie, Australia
Jesse Mallon, Australia
 Tim Swainson, Thailand
(Couldn’t resist including this one based on my injuries this year!)
Carlo Mussett, Australia

Whilst reading my latest newsletter from Desktop mag, I came across the Positive Poster 2010 finalists. As you know, I’m a big fan on the promotion of positivity, so I am totally loving the concept behind this competition.

Basically, graphic designer Nick Hallam founded Positive Posters in 2009 with the aim to plaster prominent cities like Melbourne with positive messages. Soon the concept turned into a competition for graphic designers and artists, and is run annually between July and October.

Designers are given a brief which they need to respond to and finalists are then selected, and judged by an international panel of judges (including Melbourne’s very own David Pidgeon and Michaela Webb). They then run an exhibition for all to see and soak up that creativity and positivity. Winners will be announced 12 October 2010 at the exhibition held at No Vacancy Gallery.
The lucky winner then has 4000 copies of their poster plastered all over the streets of Melbourne. I’d love to get my hands on one of those!

This year’s brief is based on an interpretation of Benjamin Franklin’s famous glass half full quote, “I haven’t failed; I’ve had 10,000 ideas that didn’t work.”

L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF) 2010 Designer Award Finalists

Dhini announced as one of this year’s seven finalists

Seven finalists have been selected to present their capsule Autumn/ Winter collections at this year’s L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival for the 2010 LMFF Designer Award, presented by Woolmark.

Dion Lee, Dhini, Gail Sorronda, Gary Bigeni, Lui Hon, Konstantina Mittas and Therese Rawsthorne were all selected as finalists from an increasingly competitive field of entrants.

The winner of the 2010 LMFF Designer Award will be presented at the conclusion of the runway presentation, to be held on Tuesday 16 March at 7.30pm at Atlantic, Central Pier, Docklands.

With a line-up like this, judges will no doubt have a tough job selecting who will win the lucrative prize from Woolmark of $10,000, as well as exclusive introductions to Woolmark’s extensive network of contacts locally and overseas.

Past winners of this prestigious award include Ben Pollitt (Friedrich Gray), Toni Maticevski, S!X, Mad Cortes, Josh Goot, TV, Yeojin Bae and Romance was Born.

My favourite from the line-up would have to be Dhini, however all seven finalists are bound to give the high profile judges a tough task of choosing who will win the award this year.

Visit LMFF for further information.

Maximise the Maxi Dress

All items from Sass & Bide (click image to enlarge) – Clockwise
Chasing Dragons dress, From The Heart tee, Ring The Bells dress, Towards The Light denim vest,
The Taboo cropped jacket, 3 Strikes dress, Pocketful Of Dreams tee, I Will Wait For You tank

It’s no secret that I am a massive fan of Sass & Bide. I love their style, the ability to mix and match their clothes, and the different ways you can play around with them.

Take for example the maxi dress. As a shortie (152cm to be exact), maxi dresses are not something I thought I could, or would, ever wear. However, the fab girls at Sass & Bide showed me that this was not the case. And now, they’re one of my favourite summer staples to experiment with.

Sure Sass & Bide‘s dresses have ties, buttons and removable bits so you can make them shorter or change the look, but the principle can be applied to dresses from other designers. For example, simply knot both sides of the dress and voila, a long dress becomes shorter and more wearable (and no tripping over the dress on the escalator).

Another thing I have discovered is that it’s really easy to change the look of a maxi dress by wearing a plain black or white tee, or singlet, over the top and knotting it at the side. Alternatively, a loose (but short) light knit looks great too for those slightly cooler nights. Or, throw a denim vest over the top for a more casual look.

I managed to wear the same maxi dress three times in one week (I have no qualms wearing something repeatedly) – at the races, a mag launch and to the pub by applying this principle.

I also love wearing my short cowboy boots with a maxi dress. It gives a completely different look to sandals or heels.

The main rules are to break the rules… experiment, have fun and don’t be afraid to take risks.

More leading designers join the fab line-up at Melbourne’s GPO

Manning Cartell opens on Level 1

Pop-up Store – Limedrop

Acne Studio opens its Melbourne flagship store – Ground Floor

My favourite shopping destination; Melbourne’s GPO, continues to attract ‘the best of the best’ of Australian and international designers with five new stores and labels opening at the prestigious centre.

Manning Cartell recently opened the doors of its Melbourne flagship store on Level 1, following the success of their Sydney store. Level 1 is synonymous with high-end fashion – much like that of The Strand in Sydney. Stores include Lisa Ho, Zimmerman, high-end boutique; Belinda, and more. Nicola Waite and Tim O’Connor also open their doors this month on Level 1, alongside pop-up store Limedrop, which will be open till January 2010.

On the Ground Floor, cult fashion labels, Acne Studio and Alpha60 open their doors, while Sass & Bide grow from strength to strength with the expansion of its existing GPO boutique.

Willow will also open its first stand-alone store which will feature Kit Willow’s eponymous label and artwork by up and coming artist Clemens Krauss, plus a selection of work from other artists.

For more information about the exciting happenings at Melbourne’s GPO, visit their fab website, and be sure to sign up for GPO’s Lovers newsletter so you can keep up-to-date with all the news, special offers and VIP events.
