In winter, black is my go-to-colour. It’s easy to wear, slimming and super versatile. As a Melbournian, it goes without saying, I own a lot of it, but there are some simple tricks I apply to ensure I get it right.
As I’m quite fair and short, solid blacks can sometimes look a bit heavy on me, so I tend to buy blacks with contrast in the fabric, such as the pictured Zimmerman velvet dress which is solid, yet sheer, and the pictured sass & bide jacket which features quilting on the collar, sleeves and base. Sheer black silks are great too.
When I do opt for straight blacks, I try to keep it really simple… skinny jeans and a boyfriend-loose fit tee, teamed with a contrasting puffy vest, a cape or tailored jacket.
Then of course, it’s all about the accessories. For me, a great pair of boots are a must. I’m obsessed with ACNE Studio’s Pistol boots! Gold jewellery (or silver if you prefer), a contrasting bag, a luminous glow (I use Hourglass NEW Ambient Lighting Powder), smokey eyes, gloss, a spritz of my favourite fragrance, and I’m set to go!

On Friday I headed along to see Runways 5 & 6 at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival… As usual, the L’Oreal Powder Room looked super stylish and was swarmed by Melbourne fashionistas itching to get their nails and lips done, and tutorials on L’Oreal Paris’ new Nude BB creams.
Here are some of my highlights from the Runway, featuring sass & bide (pic 1 & 2), Lucette (pic 3), Rodeo Show (pic 4), Bul (pic 5 & 6) and the Runway 6 finale… A sea of Pure Scarlet… L’Oreal Preference Hair Colour, P67… The amazing and official hair colour of LMFF 2013.
And finally, the bottom pic is a TV presenter outside the shows explaining to his audience that milk crates were the only way to get to model height at LMFF. LOL!

I’m not a big fan of foundation. I think it’s because I grew up in the age of cakey foundations that looked like they should be scraped off with a knife… I’ve also been one of those lucky people who usually doesn’t have to wear much. During the week I tend to only wear a tinted moisturiser with some cover up for my nose and eyes.
But, I do like to wear foundation when I go out and for special occasions. And, when I do, I want it to be light and silky, giving a fairly smooth coverage that looks very natural. I also don’t want it to feel like I’m wearing foundation.
My latest discovery is Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow from Benefit (one of my favourite make up brands). This brightening liquid foundation delivers everything I look for in a foundation. Light to medium coverage, SPF and a natural look. It also feels silky smooth, is easy to apply (I just use my fingers) and gives a nice light glow.
It comes in nine shades, ranging from Ivory to Nutmeg, and the Ivory is a perfect match for my fair skin. So close, that I may even give this foundation a whirl during the week.
What can I say but… WOW!

In How to Dress for Success Edith Head eloquently enlightens us on ways we can… well… dress for success. In chapter seven of this popular book, Edith talks about the colours we can wear to suit our complexion and how we need to understand our colour aura (the colour of our eyes, complexion and hair). She also defines a range of colour groups, including, The Elegant Colours, The Young Colours, The Slimming Colours, The Excitement Colours, The Man-Pleasing Colours (men might be immediately attracted to red but they all wear blue. Single ladies, opt for blue), and The You Colours.
‘The Excitement Colours’ caught my attention because they’re fun and so very on trend right now! Edith says that they “never fail to get a second look.”
So with that in mind, I thought I’d do a series of posts on each of Edith’s excitement colours. Starting with purple in honour of Edith’s book.
Hope you enjoy!
Shades of purple, violet and lavender suit most colour auras – in particular fair to medium skin, blondes and brunettes.

As a child growing up in the ’80s, I remember my first make up discovery was blue mascara. I used to rummage through my Mum’s make up and experiment with the different colours to see what I could get away with. One day I even rocked up to primary school in Mum’s Christian Dior blue mascara. I felt so sophisticated and grown up.
I got into trouble from the principal and put on grounds duty. But it was worth it. My life had changed forever. I was in love!
So imagine my delight in receiving an update today (alas I am not in attendance) from Rosemount Australia Fashion Week (RAFW) 2011 about the Magdalena Velevska show where Bobbi Brown was the make up partner.
A bold flash of blue mascara featured as a highlight, complimented by soft dewy skin. Immediately, my memories of that pivotal day of my fashionable youth came rushing back.
Magdalena’s collection features intricate detailing and a brilliant colour palette, balanced with a clean style. Bobbi Brown teamed this with an ethnic inspired beauty look that featured a touch of ’60s influence and intricate woven braids to create a modern take on the Russian bride. All topped off with those electric blue lashes.
Makeup Director Nica Marcello, International Artist & National Education for Bobbi Brown says “Much like the fashion we take a pretty, feminine and traditional look and fast-forward it with powerful blue lashes, infused with our Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in Cobalt.”
Create the Magdalena Velevska look for yourself with these products from Bobbi Brown:
– Foundation Stick (my own faithful foundation!)
– EXTRA Repair Foundation
– Face Highlighting Pen in Opal
– Beige Shimmer Brick
– Lashes coated with Long Wear Gel Eyeliner in Cobalt
– Lip Balm SPF 15 + Pale Pink Pot Rouge
I know I’m rushing out to get the Cobalt Gel Eyeliner to see if I can get away with it at work!

The WOW effect! “Make-up artists often say that a successful complexion depends on the attention give to it. As long as you already have the winning combination: the right texture, the right colouring, the right coverage, the right luminosity and the right application! Now that all women have access to professional tools, look out: the ‘wow’ effect is everywhere!”

Discover the secrets of professional make up with L’Oreal Paris Cosmetics’ new Studio Secrets Professional range.
Inspired by fashion icon and supermodel, Linda Evangelista, Studio Secrets Professional is the first ever professional make-up range created with an educational-style approach. The idea is to teach every woman to discover how she can easily apply make-up in the comfort of her own home, and look like a professional.
This unique range utilises highly advanced formulas to create products that offer instant, breathtaking results using a record number of tailor-made shades… so you can choose what products, textures and colours will suit you perfectly, every time.
I gave the Studio Secrets Professional Primer a go, and there is no doubt that this is a must-have product when applying make-up. It instantly smooths out lines and creates a picture perfect complexion by masking wrinkles (thank god!!) and uneven texture. After applying, my skin looked and felt smooth and velvety. The best thing about it is, that it’s great for fixing that clumpy look foundation can sometimes give you. It also keeps your make-up on all day. A winner in my book!
Some of us may not have the height to match a supermodel, but this range will make sure we look just as H-O-T!
Check out which products suit you best online, and how to apply them, at L’Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional.
Range exclusively available at Priceline.

Spring has sprung… And with it comes warmer days, lighter dressing and outdoor socialising. That means, it’s time to update your wardrobe… and your winter habits.
Here’s some essential tips for Spring:
1. Move away from the black! Whilst we love it, it starts to look a bit heavy at this time of year. Update your wardrobe with oranges and peaches – the ‘It’ colour of the season. And, if you must wear black (like me) – pick some key pieces and mix them up
2. Make sure you wear SPF everyday and carry a hat and sunnies with you at all times. Be smart, opt for fake tan instead of a real one
3. Ditch the red wine. If you’re anything like me, this is also hayfever season. The histamines in wine are only going to make that worse. Order a cocktail instead. I love Japanese Slippers – which is made from equal parts Midori, lemon juice and Triple Sec. Mix them together with some ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake shake shake – and pour into a cocktail glass. Yum!
4. Update your scent – opt for something light and fresh. Try something with citrus notes, like Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien which is made up of Sicilian lemon, citron, grapefruit and cypress
5. Finally, get out and about – the sun is shining, the air is crisp… Enjoy!
