When the lights go out… VOTE! EARTH and light a candle

Given that it’s Earth Hour this Saturday 28th March at 8.30pm – Did I mention VOTE! EARTH – I thought it only appropriate that we should explore the flickering realm of candles. Environmentally friendly ones that is.

My sister-in-law first put me onto the Ecoya brand when we were in Cradle Mountain in Tasmania over Christmas. Ecoya are an Australian based company that use only natural bases and the finest fragrance and essential oils. All candles are hand poured and made from Soy and Palm wax, making them not only friendly for us, but for the environment. No harmful petroleum based paraffin. Even their wicks are made from 100% pure lead-free cotton. The care and effort that goes into these candles is worth it, they smell so pure and fresh. Also, you don’t get that yucky smoky after-effect when you blow them out. Just a beautiful scent that lingers in the room for ages.

I particularly love their Soy Wax Melts. Just pop one of these babies into your oil burner (no water required) as you would with essential oils, light a tea light, and watch it melt down and burn for ages. And, you can keep reusing it. Nice. I also keep one of their Travel Tins in my suitcase for when I attend work conferences. It’s nice for unwinding in the hotel room after a long tiring day.

If you’re located in Melbourne you can find Ecoya candles at: Amo La Vida in South Melbourne, Melbourne Central Pharmacy and Miss Lau in Flinders Lane. You can also find them online at Candelabra, Skin Matrix and Something Fabulous

Aveda is doing there part for the environment with their natural candles formulated from pure products such as beeswax, soy wax, sweet almond oil and 100% pure flower and plant aromas. They are also the first beauty company to manufacture their products with 100% wind power. It doesn’t stop there… as part of Earth Month, 100% of the proceeds from the Aveda Light The Way Candle (retailing at $19.95) are being donated to the Global Greengrants Fund.

So, do your bit VOTE! EARTH and turn off the lights this Saturday 28th March at 8.30pm for an hour. While you’re at it, chill out for the hour and immerse yourself in the beautiful aromas of an all natural candle. Stare at the flame and reflect on all the natural things in life that make you happy… think of the ocean, waterfalls, clear blue skies and all the wonderful things that we so often take for granted. That is of course unless you’re out on the town tearing up the dance floor… that’s where I’ll be!
