Hats #inspo hats.002 hats.003 hats.004 hats.005 hats.006

Hats seem to be all the rage this winter. And, well, I for one am super stoked about it. Usually, I’m too scared to wear them in fear that I will look silly or like I’m trying to hard. Which, if we’re honest is a possibility. The result of this is that my hat stand seems to wear more hats than I do (except during spring racing season when my hat boxes filled with feathery treasures come out).

Buying a hat? The trick is to find a hat that suits you, fits your head, is comfortable and goes perfectly with the type of outfit you plan to wear it with. Trial and error is the key, just pop into the store and try them all on. Perhaps take a friend with you who’ll give you their honest opinion.

Personally, I encourage you to do this when you’re pretty much wearing what you might plan to wear it with and make up on. It really is hard to gauge how you look in a hat when you’re looking pale and have your gym clothes on (unless you’re buying a baseball cap).

If you’re going to buy online, make sure you know what styles suit you first and that they have a sizing guide (for example, Lack of Colour have a great sizing guide). Finally, if you’re buying a wider brim hat, opt for a contrasting colour to what you traditionally wear so you don’t get completely lost under it.

Oh, and don’t be like me every other year. Be brave. Wear the hat! Just remember your manners and the appropriate occasions to wear it.

Glitter Fridays #inspoGlitter Fridays #inspo

It’s no big secret that I love Fridays. Most people I’ve worked with would know I have a (possibly annoying) habit of starting the day with the words “Guess what? Then, dramatically pausing for effect… “It’s Friday!”

I love Fridays for the obvious reasons, the weekend is on the horizon, everyone’s a bit more relaxed, there’s a nice cold glass of something waiting for me at the end of the day… etc. etc.

But, I also love Fridays because it’s the day I add an extra zing in my step by adding some fabulous bling to an otherwise casual outfit. Hence, why I also call Friday – Glitter Friday, Sparkle Friday and Giddiup Friday!

So, in the spirit of #glitterfriday… I trawled Pinterest for some sparkling inspiration. Enjoy!

DISCLAIMER: Truth is bling can be for everyday… But not every day can be called Glitter Friday.😉

behind the scenes @ sachi shoes AW14 campaign shoot

It’s no secret I’ve been pretty quiet on here for the last 6 months or so. You’ll be pleased to know, that I’ve been anything but quiet!

Late last year, I started a new Marketing and PR gig working on two very exciting Australian shoe brands, Sachi and Julius Marlow (for men). It’s been a whirlwind of shoes (so many beautiful shoes!), events, photo shoots, campaign planning, season launches and more… and, of course, a whole lot of other fun.

The above clip takes you behind the scenes of one of our most recent projects; the Sachi ‘Walk this Way’ Autumn/ Winter 2014 campaign shoot.

It was an amazing, yet challenging day (shooting a winter shoot on a 35 degree day is bound to be), filled with lots of fun thanks to an awesome team of talented, professional and passionate people. And, the outcome… well it’s something to be pretty proud of!

See more of the campaign on Sachi’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

how to wear winter black: contrast, accessorise and glow

How to Wear Winter Black - Contrast and Accessorise via @houseofturtlecontrast and accesorise :: mania mania laurel canyon necklace, sass & bide juxtaposed bag and the whistle blower quilted jacket, zimmerman dazed maze dress and acne studios pistol boots

In winter, black is my go-to-colour. It’s easy to wear, slimming and super versatile. As a Melbournian, it goes without saying, I own a lot of it, but there are some simple tricks I apply to ensure I get it right.

As I’m quite fair and short, solid blacks can sometimes look a bit heavy on me, so I tend to buy blacks with contrast in the fabric, such as the pictured Zimmerman velvet dress which is solid, yet sheer, and the pictured sass & bide jacket which features quilting on the collar, sleeves and base. Sheer black silks are great too.

When I do opt for straight blacks, I try to keep it really simple… skinny jeans and a boyfriend-loose fit tee, teamed with a contrasting puffy vest, a cape or tailored jacket.

Then of course, it’s all about the accessories. For me, a great pair of boots are a must. I’m obsessed with ACNE Studio’s Pistol boots! Gold jewellery (or silver if you prefer), a contrasting bag, a luminous glow (I use Hourglass NEW Ambient Lighting Powder), smokey eyes, gloss, a spritz of my favourite fragrance, and I’m set to go!

moroccan chickpea pilaf with feta and falafels

Moroccan Chickpea Piliaf with Feta and Falafels via @houseofturtleI’m not great at following recipes. I’m not sure if this is because I’m too lazy to read them properly or if it’s because I tend to be a little bit experimental in the kitchen. Let’s go with the later.

Tonight, I made this very simple Moroccan style Chickpea Pilaf with Feta and Falafels. I got the inspiration from taste.com.au‘s recipe for Chickpea Pilaf with Haloumi and of course, gave it my own twist. And, it was great. It had lots of flavour and textures, as well as being quite light and fresh.

Note, I generally cook for one. So, this is way too much food for me. However, I intend to use the rice mixture in other dishes throughout the week (not too long though as rice can go bad)… such as roasted stuffed capsicums and tuna cakes.

  • 2 cups of Basmati Rice
(alternatively, you could use Brown Rice, Quinoa or Cous Cous)
  • 2 cups of Chicken or Vegetable Stock (optional, can use water)
  • 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil
  • 2 medium to large Brown Onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup of Shredded Almonds
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of Moroccan Seasoning
  • 400gm can of Chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 bunch of Coriander, roughly chopped
  • 1/4 cup of Pistachios, roughly chopped
  • Pre-made Falafels, preferably organic – prepare as per instructions
  • Marinated Feta

What to do

  • Cook the rice via your preferred method. For this, I used a rice cooker and stock instead of water.
  • Heat the Olive Oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook the Onion (stir often) for 10 minutes or until light golden. Stir in the Moroccan Seasoning and Shredded Almonds and cook for another 1 minute.
  • Add the cooked Rice and Chickpeas. Stir till the ingredients are mixed through (you want the colour of the Onions and Seasoning to coat the rice).
  • Now, you can either add all the Coriander and Pistachios at this stage, or if you are making a smaller batch like I was, add your desired serving to a bowl and add Coriander and Pistachios to taste.
  • Top with Falafels and Marinated Feta.
  • I also added a few spoons of the Oil from the Feta to add some moistness to the Falafels and a little extra kick. Alternatively, you could squeeze some Lemon on top.
  • Finally, take a picture, share on Instagram and dive in!

Let me know how you go or if you used your own variation.

the well nest paleo coconut flour blueberry muffins

The Well Nest Paleo Coconut Flour Blueberry Muffins via @houseofturtle

I’m not technically working at the moment (just a bit of freelance/ consulting work and looking for more!) and have way too much time on my hands. So, I’ve been taking advantage of this time at home by whipping up lots of delicious and healthy treats in the kitchen.

Whilst I’m not strictly healthy or organic all the time, when I cook, I generally ‘try’ to use fresh, quality, organic ingredients and keep the nasties at a minimum (to offset the damage I do when I’m out).

My friend Valeria Ramirez, over at The Well Nest, often inspires me with her healthy lifestyle posts and recently shared this delicious muffin recipe, so I thought I’d give it a go. Not only are they super healthy (due to the use of coconut flour which is heat stable and nasty-free), they’re delicious!

Note, I’ve haven’t baked anything for about 20 years! So, when I made mine, I forgot to do a few things, which to be honest, wasn’t a disaster. I forgot to buy shredded coconut, so I added a little extra coconut flour and some slivered almonds instead. I also used a whole 165 ml tin of coconut milk, instead of the 4 tbs, which probably made up for the fact that forgot to put in the coconut oil! Next time, I’ll try to read the recipe properly, but I think I’ll add a little extra honey for sweetness.

  • 1/2 cup of Coconut Flour
  • 1/4 cup Shredded Coconut
  • 5 tablespoons of Coconut Oil
  • 6 Organic Eggs
  • 4 tablespoons of Coconut Milk (or dairy)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan Rock Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Raw Honey
  • 1/2 cup of Blueberries

What to do

  • Combine wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls.
  • Mix together wet and dry ingredients.
  • Fold in berries.
  • Pour the batter into muffin pan (makes about 12)
  • Bake at 200 degrees C for 10-20 minutes – keep an eye on them so that they don’t brown too quickly.

capture the cover competition

Hawthorn Sunset via @houseofturtle #capturethecover @yellow_auSunset view from my balcony in Hawthorn on Thursday night

Whilst this winter has been ridiculously cold, we’ve also been blessed with some beautiful sunshine and amazing sunsets. This week I’ve seen some truly incredible shots from everyone on my Instagram feed. Imagine if these shots could see you share in more than $60,000 worth of prizes and star on the front cover of your local Yellow Pages!

Sound appealing? Well, here’s my challenge to you this weekend and for the next couple of months! Get out of bed (always a good start), put on your comfiest (and of course most stylish) clothes and wander down to your favourite cafe, shops, park and hidden haunts in your local area. Take your camera with you or be sure to have your smartphone handy. Snap lots of pics on your journey of what you know and love about the place you call ‘home’.

When you’re done, hop online and enter your best pics into the 2014 Yellow Pages Capture the Cover competition. Or, better yet, do it straight from your phone while you’re out and about via Instagram. Simply tag your pic with #capturethecover and mention @yellow_au in your post! Be sure to tag the name of your suburb also to give it the credit it deserves!

As the theme of this year’s competition is ‘Only Locals Know’, photos must be of your local area. And, no head shots or selfies!

So, go on… get out of bed, head out the door and get snapping!

Visit Capture the Cover for full details. Competition closes 1 September for Adelaide; 8 September for Perth; 22 September for Brisbane; 6 October for Sydney; and 20 October for Melbourne (2013).

yellow pages open capture the cover competition

2013 Yellow Pages Winner for @yellow_au #capturethecover via @houseofturtle2013 Yellow Pages Winner for @yellow_au #capturethecover via @houseofturtle

Yellow Pages is calling for budding photographers across Australia to shoot its next covers and gain valuable exposure in the process.

Following a successful first year in 2012, Yellow Pages’ Capture The Cover photographic competition is back, once again giving locals in Australia’s major capital cities the chance to have a say in the images that represent their community on the cover of their local phone book and showcase their work to thousands.

Judged by leading photographers Steve Parish, Steve Fraser, Mark Lobo, Mark Kimber and Penelope Beveridge, Capture The Cover asks residents in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth to upload original photographs showcasing a hidden gem in their community for the chance to win a share in more than $60,000 prizes.

A total of eight images will appear on each of the 36 covers across the cities, which will reflect the theme Only Locals Know.

Last year, amateur photographers, iPhoneographers and locals with point-and-shoot cameras were among more than 350 winners across Australia to have their photos featured on a Yellow Pages cover.

Perth judge, photographer Steve Fraser said this year’s competition will aim to celebrate little-known local spots on each cover under the theme Only Locals Know.
“It might be a favourite quiet place, the best spot to watch the sunset, a hidden piece of graffiti or even the tastiest coffee only locals know about,” Mr Fraser said.

“For me, a winning entry is always one that communicates a feeling – a great shot goes beyond technical composition. I’d tell entrants not to be afraid of taking lots of photos – the more you shoot, the more you can potentially capture.”

To enter, metro residents are encouraged to take a photo of the best kept secret in their community and enter at Capture the Cover for their snap to be considered for one of eight spots on each cover. By doing so, entrants go in the running to win $1000 cash or seven $100 cash prizes up for grabs on each cover.

Locals can also enter via Instagram by tagging their photo #CaptureTheCover and @Yellow_Au.

Locals can enter as many times as they like.

Visit Capture the Cover for full details. Competition closes 1 September for Adelaide; 8 September for Perth; 22 September for Brisbane; 6 October for Sydney; and 20 October for Melbourne (2013).

LMFF 2013: runway 5 & 6

On Friday I headed along to see Runways 5 & 6 at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival… As usual, the L’Oreal Powder Room looked super stylish and was swarmed by Melbourne fashionistas itching to get their nails and lips done, and tutorials on L’Oreal Paris’ new Nude BB creams.

Here are some of my highlights from the Runway, featuring sass & bide (pic 1 & 2), Lucette (pic 3), Rodeo Show (pic 4), Bul (pic 5 & 6) and the Runway 6 finale… A sea of Pure Scarlet… L’Oreal Preference Hair Colour, P67… The amazing and official hair colour of LMFF 2013.

And finally, the bottom pic is a TV presenter outside the shows explaining to his audience that milk crates were the only way to get to model height at LMFF. LOL!

wish list: boots, jackets and jewels

Acne Studios Star boots in blueBoots, jackets and jewels are three of my all-time favourite fashion items. So, it’s no surprise that I’m currently coveting these super H-O-T, deliciously blue, Star ankle boots from Acne Studios; this oh so light, bright and colourful silk blazer from Scanlan & Theodore; and this fabulous bling from Lady Fox Accessories‘ new collection, which is inspired by vintage classics, geometry and a dash of the Renaissance.

If they all magically appeared in my wardrobe, I’d wear them together with a simple tee and a pair of skinny jeans. Divine!
